The Chronic was recorded primarily at Dr. Dre's home studio in Compton, California, as well as at other Los Angeles-area studios during 1991-1992. Dr. Dre served as the primary producer and architect of the album's sound, working with engineers including DJ Pooh and utilizing E-mu SP-1200 and ASR-10 samplers that became instrumental to the G-funk production style. The album featured innovative production techniques including layered synthesizers, heavy use of funk samples, and crisp drum programming that defined West Coast hip-hop sonically. Released in December 1992, The Chronic marked a departure from the harder gangsta rap sound of N.W.A, establishing a new production template that emphasized musicality and groove. The album's commercial success and critical acclaim established Dre as one of hip-hop's most influential producers and helped launch the careers of Snoop Dogg and other West Coast artists.
