Hotel California was recorded primarily at Criteria Studios in Miami and Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles between 1976 and 1977. The album was produced by Bill Szymczyk, who had worked with the Eagles on previous records, and the band members themselves served as co-producers. Engineers Larry Massey and Ed Massey contributed to the recording sessions, which were notable for their meticulous layering of guitar tracks, particularly the elaborate dual-guitar harmonies and the iconic closing solo on the title track, performed by Don Felder and Joe Walsh. The production made extensive use of multitrack recording technology to achieve the dense, polished sound that became emblematic of the late 1970s California rock aesthetic. Released in February 1977, the album marked a creative and commercial peak for the band, eventually winning the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for its title track.
