Recording took place at multiple studios including Record Plant and other Los Angeles-based facilities that were equipped with the latest recording technology of the era. The production featured the band's signature blend of live instrumentation, layered horn arrangements, and sophisticated studio techniques, with particular emphasis on multi-track recording and overdubbing to create the lush, complex sound. The album's commercial and critical success established Earth, Wind & Fire as one of the most important acts in funk and R&B, and it won the Grammy Award for Best Original Score.
