Ella Fitzgerald's Cole Porter Songbook was recorded between 1956 and 1957 at various studios including Capitol Studios in Hollywood, with producer-arranger Nelson Riddle overseeing the project for Verve Records. The album featured full orchestral arrangements by Nelson Riddle, who worked closely with Fitzgerald to interpret Porter's sophisticated compositions with jazz sensibility and lyrical precision. The recording sessions took place over multiple sessions across several months, allowing Fitzgerald and Riddle to meticulously craft interpretations of each song. This was one of the first major installments in Verve Records' ambitious Songbook series, which aimed to document Fitzgerald performing the complete works of major American composers. The album's success established the template for subsequent songbook projects and demonstrated Fitzgerald's versatility in interpreting jazz standards with orchestral backing.
