"Ella and Louis" was recorded in 1956 at the Capitol Studios in Hollywood with producer Norman Granz, who also founded the Verve Records label that released the album. The sessions brought together two of jazz's greatest vocalists for the first time in a studio setting, with arrangements by Nelson Riddle and Buddy Bregman that complemented both singers' styles. The recording was notable for its intimate vocal interplay and the skilled accompaniment of a small jazz ensemble, capturing the spontaneity of live performance while maintaining studio quality. Granz's production emphasized the singers' phrasing and emotional connection to the material rather than elaborate orchestration, resulting in one of the most celebrated vocal jazz albums of the 1950s. The album became a commercial and critical success, establishing a template for collaborative vocal jazz recordings and remaining influential in the genre.
