Ella and Louis — Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong

Ella and Louis

First released

Ella and Louis was recorded in 1956 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, featuring the first formal studio collaboration between Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. The album was produced by Norman Granz, who also founded Verve Records, the label that released the album in 1957. The recording sessions brought together two jazz legends at the peak of their careers, with Armstrong on trumpet and vocals and Fitzgerald on vocals, accompanied by a small group that included pianist Oscar Peterson and bassist Ray Brown. The sessions were notable for their relaxed, intimate atmosphere that captured the natural chemistry and spontaneous interplay between the two vocalists. The album became one of the most celebrated jazz recordings of the 1950s and remains a landmark example of vocal jazz collaboration.
