Figure 8, Elliott Smith's fifth studio album released in 2000, was recorded across multiple studios including the Safehouse in Los Angeles and various other locations, reflecting Smith's meticulous and often laborious recording approach. The album was primarily produced by Elliott Smith himself along with Rob Schnapf and Tom Rothrock, who had previously worked with Smith on XO. Smith employed his characteristic multi-tracking technique, layering numerous vocal and instrumental parts to create dense, intricate arrangements that showcased his evolving production skills. The recording process was notably protracted and perfectionist, with Smith spending considerable time on details and often re-recording elements, which contributed to the album's polished yet emotionally intimate sound. Figure 8 marked a continuation of Smith's indie rock sophistication while demonstrating increased confidence in his production decisions during a period of growing mainstream recognition following the success of his earlier work.
