Honky Château was recorded in France at the Château d'Hérouville in August 1971, making it Elton John's first album recorded outside the United States. The album was produced by Steve Brown and Elton John, with engineer Caleb Quaye managing the recording sessions. The creative partnership between Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin was in its creative peak, resulting in a more rock-oriented sound compared to his earlier work. The recording marked a significant turning point in John's career, as it became his first major commercial success and helped establish him as a major artist in both the UK and US markets.
