Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Brain Salad Surgery

First released

Brain Salad Surgery, released in 1973, was recorded at multiple studios including the band's own Manticore Studios in London, as well as sessions at other facilities. The album was produced by Emerson, Lake & Palmer themselves in collaboration with engineer and producer Pete Brown, who helped shape the album's distinctive sound. The recording showcased the band's ambitious use of synthesizers, particularly Keith Emerson's Moog and Hammond B3 organ work, representing a peak of progressive rock's technical ambition during the early 1970s. The album was notable for its elaborate production and dense layering of instruments and effects, which pushed contemporary recording technology of the era. Brain Salad Surgery became one of the band's most commercially successful albums and is considered a landmark in progressive rock, winning a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album.
