The recording sessions were relatively straightforward, capturing the band's live energy with minimal overdubbing, which was characteristic of Johns' production approach. The album was released in November 1977 and became commercially successful, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart and spawning the hit single "Lay Down Sally." The production marked a turning point where Clapton moved away from his earlier harder rock sound toward a more accessible, radio-friendly blues-rock style.
