Argo — LPS 4003

At Last! was recorded at the RCA Victor Studios in Hollywood, California in 1960 and 1961, with sessions produced by Harvey Fuqua and recorded under the direction of RCA's production team. The album featured lush orchestral arrangements by Ray Raindel and Riley Hampton, which represented a significant departure from Etta James's earlier blues and R&B work and reflected the early 1960s trend of jazz and pop crossover appeal. The recording sessions showcased James's powerful contralto voice against sophisticated string arrangements and big band instrumentation, establishing a more upscale, mainstream sound designed to broaden her commercial appeal. The title track, also called At Last!, became her signature song and one of the most iconic recordings of her career, though it was not originally written for this album. The production exemplified the polished, orchestral approach that characterized many soul and R&B recordings of the early 1960s, marking a turning point in how the label sought to position James as a sophisticated entertainer.
