Helplessness Blues was recorded primarily at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles and other locations between 2010 and 2011, following the band's successful debut album. The album was produced by the band themselves alongside producer Phil Rado, who had worked with them previously. Fleet Foxes employed a more expansive and elaborate approach to songwriting and arrangement compared to their debut, incorporating live instrumentation and intricate vocal harmonies across a larger canvas. The recording process involved extensive layering of instruments and vocals, with the band taking considerable time to refine their compositions during the sessions. The album marked a stylistic evolution toward more complex, prog-influenced folk music while maintaining the band's signature Pacific Northwest indie folk aesthetic.
