Tusk was recorded between 1978 and 1979 primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, with additional sessions at the Chateau d'Hérouville in France and other studios. The album was produced by Fleetwood Mac themselves alongside Richard Dashut and engineer Ken Caillat, marking a shift toward greater band control over production. Lindsey Buckingham's creative direction was prominent throughout the recording process, as he experimented with unconventional recording techniques and instrumentation, including the famous marching band drums on the title track recorded at UCLA's football stadium. The production was notably expensive and lengthy, taking over a year to complete and becoming one of the most costly albums produced at that time. Tusk reflected the band's internal dynamics during a period of personal and creative tension, ultimately resulting in a more experimental sound compared to their previous album Rumours.
