Apostrophe (') was recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles between 1973 and 1974 during a prolific period for Frank Zappa. Zappa produced and engineered the album himself with assistance from engineer Davey Moire, utilizing the latest multitrack recording technology available at the time. The album showcased Zappa's characteristic approach of layering complex instrumental arrangements and vocal overdubs, with recording sessions involving various session musicians and band members. Released in March 1974, the album reflected Zappa's satirical songwriting and technical experimentation, becoming one of his commercially successful releases. The production exemplified Zappa's meticulous control over every aspect of his music, from performance to final mix.
