Sheik Yerbouti — Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa

Sheik Yerbouti

First released

Sheik Yerbouti was recorded primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles during 1977 and 1978, with Frank Zappa serving as producer and maintaining creative control over the project. The album was engineered by Davey Moire and Kerry McNab, utilizing 16-track recording technology to capture Zappa's complex arrangements and overdubbed performances. Zappa recorded the majority of guitar and keyboard parts himself, layering multiple instrumental tracks in his characteristically meticulous manner. The album's production reflected Zappa's shift toward incorporating more satirical, comedic, and sexually explicit lyrical content, showcased through both studio-crafted instrumental passages and vocal-heavy narrative pieces. Released in March 1979, Sheik Yerbouti became one of Zappa's most commercially successful albums, reaching the top 40 on the Billboard charts and establishing his technical approach to independent record production.
