Red Clay, recorded in 1969 and released in 1970 on CTI Records, was produced by Creed Taylor at a time when the label was pioneering the fusion of jazz with R&B and pop sensibilities. The album was recorded at CTI's preferred studios in New York, featuring Freddie Hubbard's trumpet alongside keyboardist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The production emphasized lush orchestral arrangements and contemporary recording techniques that gave the jazz performances a more accessible, commercial sound compared to traditional hard bop recordings. Red Clay became one of Hubbard's most commercially successful albums and helped establish CTI as a leading force in crossover jazz during the early 1970s. The album's polished sound and accessible melodies marked a significant moment in jazz history when the genre began incorporating elements of soul and funk music.
