Fire and Water

First released

Fire and Water, Free's second album released in 1970, was recorded at Island Records' studios in London under the production of Guy Stevens, who was known for his energetic and unconventional production approach. The album was engineered primarily by Andy Johns, a respected sound engineer who would become known for his work with major rock acts. The band captured their blues-rock sound using the studio equipment available in early 1970, with Stevens encouraging the band to focus on live, energetic performances rather than heavy studio manipulation. The recording sessions took place during a period when Free was establishing itself as a leading British blues-rock band, and the album's success helped solidify their commercial breakthrough. Fire and Water became one of Free's most commercially successful releases, featuring the hit single "All Right Now," and demonstrated the band's ability to craft accessible rock songs while maintaining their blues-influenced roots.
