Garbage's self-titled debut album was recorded primarily at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, and Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, between 1994 and 1995. The album was produced by the band members themselves—Butch Vig, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson, and Shirley Manson—with Vig taking a leading role in the production process. The recording utilized a combination of analog tape and digital recording techniques, with Vig employing his signature production style of heavily manipulated vocals and layered instrumentation. The album featured extensive use of sampling, drum machines, and synthesizers alongside traditional instruments, reflecting the industrial rock and electronic music influences of the mid-1990s. Released in 1998, the album became a commercial and critical success, establishing Garbage as a significant act in alternative and industrial rock music of the era.
