Version 2.0 — Garbage

Garbage

Version 2.0

First released

Garbage recorded Version 2.0 primarily at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin and at various other facilities between 1997 and 1998. The band worked with producer Butch Vig, who co-founded Garbage and had previously engineered and produced the self-titled debut, alongside engineer and mixer Duke Levine. The album was notable for its use of digital editing and sampling technologies, with the band experimenting more extensively with electronic production techniques and drum programming compared to their debut. Version 2.0 was released in May 1998 and marked a shift toward more polished, radio-friendly alternative rock while maintaining the band's industrial and electronic foundation. The production reflected the late 1990s shift in alternative music toward more accessible songwriting without sacrificing sonic experimentation.
