Garbage recorded Version 2.0 at various studios including Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, and other locations between 1997 and 1998. The album was produced by the band members themselves—Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig—along with producer Nigel Godrich, who contributed significantly to the sonic direction. The recording process incorporated a blend of analog and digital techniques, with the band utilizing sampling, sequencing, and live instrumentation to expand on their electronic rock sound established on their debut. Version 2.0 was released in 1998 and marked the band's evolution toward more experimental and layered production compared to their self-titled first album. The album's production reflected the late 1990s alternative rock aesthetic while incorporating electronic elements that influenced the industrial rock genre of the era.
