Garbage recorded Version 2.0 between 1997 and 1998 primarily at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, and Pachyderm Studio in Minnesota, with additional work at other facilities. The album was produced by the band members themselves—Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig—along with producer Rich Costey, who brought fresh perspectives to their sonic approach. The band employed a more adventurous and experimental production style compared to their debut, incorporating diverse influences and production techniques while maintaining their electronic-rock foundation. Recorded using a combination of analog and digital equipment, the sessions reflected the late 1990s transition in music production technology. Version 2.0 was released in 1998 and marked the band's attempt to evolve their sound while dealing with increased commercial pressure following the success of their debut album.
