Nursery Cryme, Genesis's third studio album, was recorded at Island Studios in London during 1971 and released in November of that year. The album was produced by John Burns, a seasoned producer who had worked with various progressive rock acts, with engineering contributions from Nick Davis. The recording marked the band's continued evolution toward more elaborate arrangements and longer compositional forms, featuring the 23-minute track "Supper's Ready" which showcased the interplay between guitarist Steve Hackett's recent addition to the band and keyboardist Tony Banks's complex arrangements. The album was recorded using analog technology typical of the era, with the band working to achieve fuller orchestral textures through overdubbing and layering of keyboards and guitars. Nursery Cryme established Genesis as significant figures in the emerging progressive rock movement and remains one of their most acclaimed early works.
