Selling England by the Pound — Genesis

Genesis

Selling England by the Pound

First released

Selling England by the Pound was recorded at Island Studios in London between December 1972 and February 1973, during a period when Genesis was transitioning from their prog-rock foundations toward more accessible songwriting. The album was produced by the band themselves alongside John Burns, an engineer who had worked with Yes and other progressive rock acts, bringing technical expertise to the sessions. The band employed multi-track recording techniques to layer complex arrangements featuring Peter Gabriel's distinctive vocals, Steve Hackett's intricate guitar work, and Tony Banks' elaborate keyboard parts. The production captured the band at a creative peak, utilizing state-of-the-art studio equipment of the era to achieve the album's densely orchestrated yet relatively cohesive sound compared to their previous release Foxtrot. The album was released in October 1973 and became one of Genesis' most commercially successful works, establishing them as major figures in progressive rock during the early 1970s.
