Selling England by the Pound was recorded at Island Studios in London between March and May 1973, during a period when Genesis was establishing itself as a progressive rock force following Peter Gabriel's emergence as the band's distinctive frontman. The album was produced by the band themselves in collaboration with engineer John Burns, who played a crucial role in capturing the group's increasingly ambitious arrangements and layered instrumentation. The recording sessions took advantage of 24-track recording technology, allowing the band to experiment with complex orchestrations, including Mellotron keyboards and elaborate vocal harmonies that became hallmarks of the album. The production reflected the band's desire to create a more cohesive and thematically unified work compared to their previous album Foxtrot, with particular attention paid to the instrumental textures and production details that would define 1970s progressive rock. Released in October 1973, the album's polished yet organic sound helped establish Genesis as major contenders in the progressive rock scene alongside contemporaries like Yes and Jethro Tull.
