Use Your Illusion I was recorded between 1988 and 1990 at multiple studios including One on One Studios in Los Angeles, Capitol Studios, and other facilities. The album was produced by Guns N' Roses themselves alongside Mike Clink, who had also produced their debut Appetite for Destruction. The recording sessions were marked by extended timelines and multiple takes as the band pursued sonic perfection across the 30 tracks that would be split between the two Illusion albums. The production incorporated a diverse range of instrumentation including orchestral arrangements and piano, representing a significant expansion beyond the band's hard rock roots. Released in September 1991 alongside Use Your Illusion II, the album became a commercial success and marked the band's most ambitious recording project to date.
