Use Your Illusion I was recorded primarily at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles and The Mixing Factory, with additional sessions at other facilities between 1990 and 1991. The album was produced by Guns N' Roses, with Nigel Iwuji serving as engineer and Tom Zutaut as executive producer overseeing the project. The recording sessions were characterized by extensive experimentation, with the band working on numerous songs and re-recording existing material, reflecting the creative ambitions of the band during their peak commercial period. Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero mixed the final album, utilizing advanced mixing techniques available in the early 1990s to achieve the polished sound that defined the record. The production took nearly two years to complete, coinciding with the peak of the band's popularity following the massive success of Appetite for Destruction.
