Use Your Illusion I was recorded primarily at One on One Studios in Los Angeles and The Right Track Studios in New York between 1988 and 1990, with additional sessions at other facilities. The album was produced by Guns N' Roses, with Mike Clink serving as executive producer and engineer, bringing his experience from the Appetite for Destruction sessions. The recording process was notably extended and troubled, marked by internal band tensions, lineup changes, and Axl Rose's perfectionism, which contributed to the album's bloated production and lengthy development. The sessions featured a much larger sonic palette than the band's debut, incorporating orchestral arrangements, keyboards, and diverse musical styles that required extensive overdubbing and studio experimentation. The album's two-volume release strategy (Use Your Illusion I and II simultaneously in September 1991) reflected both the band's commercial ambitions and the practical necessity of managing the massive amount of material accumulated during these protracted recording sessions.
