Soul Station — Hank Mobley

Hank Mobley

Soul Station

First released

Soul Station by Hank Mobley was recorded on September 4, 1960, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, under the direction of producer Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records. The session featured Mobley's tenor saxophone with a rhythm section including Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Blakey on drums, a configuration that produced some of Mobley's most celebrated work. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder's technical expertise was instrumental in capturing the warm, detailed sound characteristic of Blue Note recordings from this period. The album represents a high point of hard bop recording, with Mobley's accessible melodic approach and the tight interplay of the ensemble reflecting the label's commitment to both artistic integrity and commercial appeal in early 1960s jazz.
