Herbie Hancock

Empyrean Isles

First released

Empyrean Isles was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 17, 1964, and was engineered by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder. The album was produced by Alfred Lion for Blue Note Records and featured Herbie Hancock on piano alongside saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Tony Williams. The sessions showcased Blue Note's commitment to capturing acoustic jazz in a live, intimate setting using Van Gelder's renowned recording techniques. The recording marked one of Hancock's earlier appearances as a bandleader on a major label and helped establish his reputation before his later fusion work. The album's modal compositions and the interplay between the musicians reflected the post-bop jazz aesthetic that was prominent in 1964.
