Empyrean Isles was recorded on June 17, 1964, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with engineer Rudy Van Gelder overseeing the sessions. The album was produced by Alfred Lion for Blue Note Records and featured Herbie Hancock on piano with a rhythm section including Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, alongside saxophonist Eric Dolphy on select tracks. The recording captured Hancock's early modal and post-bop compositions in a relatively straightforward manner, utilizing the studio's renowned acoustic properties that Van Gelder had specifically designed for jazz recording. This session represented one of Hancock's first albums as a leader and showcased his emerging compositional voice during a transitional period in jazz that blended hard bop with modal influences.
