Herbie Hancock

Head Hunters

First released

Head Hunters, released in 1973, was recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles under the production of Herbie Hancock and David Rubinson. The album marked Hancock's embrace of funk and fusion, featuring a stripped-down rhythm section with bassist Paul Jackson and drummer Mike Clark, along with synthesizer player Bernie Worrell. Recording took place over several sessions in 1973, capturing the live, groove-oriented sound that defined the album's commercial breakthrough. The production approach emphasized tight, syncopated rhythms and layered synthesizer textures that would become influential in both jazz fusion and funk music. Head Hunters became one of Hancock's most commercially successful albums, reaching the top 20 on the Billboard 200 and establishing funk fusion as a viable commercial format.
