Blue Note — BLP 4195

Maiden Voyage was recorded in 1969 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California, during a period when Herbie Hancock was transitioning from his Blue Note Records contract to Warner Bros. The album was produced by David Rubinson and Herbie Hancock himself, with engineering by John Guerin and others at the studio. Hancock employed innovative studio techniques for the time, including extensive use of electric piano and synthesizers alongside acoustic instruments, creating a sophisticated fusion of jazz and electronic sounds. The recording sessions featured his working quartet and reflected the avant-garde production aesthetic that was emerging in jazz during the late 1960s. The album became influential in establishing the sound of fusion and progressive jazz, with its polished production quality representing a significant technical achievement for jazz recording at that time.
