Maiden Voyage was recorded in 1964 at the Columbia Records 30th Street Studio in New York City, with Alfred Lion and Francis Wolf serving as producers for the Blue Note Records label. Herbie Hancock led a quintet featuring Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass, Tony Williams on drums, and Pete LaRoca on percussion, showcasing the young pianist's compositional talents. The sessions were engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, whose meticulous recording techniques captured the intimate acoustic sound characteristic of Blue Note's production aesthetic. Hancock's use of the Fender Rhodes electric piano alongside acoustic instruments represented an innovative blend that influenced jazz-fusion developments in the coming years. The album, released in 1965, demonstrated Hancock's emergence as a significant composer and bandleader during a pivotal period of modal and post-bop jazz experimentation.
