Philles Records — PHLP 4011

River Deep – Mountain High was recorded at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles in 1966 under the production of Phil Spector, who employed his signature Wall of Sound technique to create the album's distinctive dense orchestral arrangements. The recording sessions featured multiple layers of instrumentation including numerous guitars, pianos, horns, and percussion to achieve Spector's characteristic wall of sound approach. Engineer Larry Levine worked with Spector during the sessions, utilizing the studio's renowned acoustics and the latest recording technology available at that time. The album represented a significant collaboration between Spector's innovative production methods and Tina Turner's powerful vocal delivery, though it was initially released to modest commercial success before becoming recognized as a landmark achievement in 1960s soul and rock music. The production reflected the peak of Spector's creative period and remains one of the most sonically ambitious soul recordings of the era.
