River Deep – Mountain High — Ike & Tina Turner

Ike & Tina Turner

River Deep – Mountain High

First released

River Deep – Mountain High was recorded in 1966 at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles under the direction of producer Phil Spector, who employed his signature Wall of Sound production technique. The album featured Ike Turner as co-producer alongside Spector, with the recording sessions utilizing multiple layers of instruments including orchestral arrangements and an unusually dense instrumental approach. Spector's unconventional mixing and production methods, combined with extensive overdubbing and echo effects, created the album's distinctive expansive sound. The title track became one of the most celebrated examples of Spector's Wall of Sound philosophy, though initial commercial success in the United States was limited. The album is now recognized as a landmark in 1960s soul and pop music production, influencing generations of producers and remaining a technical achievement in recording history.
