Turn On the Bright Lights

First released

Turn On the Bright Lights, Interpol's debut album released in 2002, was recorded at Matador Records' in-house studio and other New York locations during 2001-2002. The album was produced by Peter Katis and Interpol themselves, with Katis bringing his experience in capturing raw, guitar-driven indie rock sounds. The band employed a relatively minimalist production approach that emphasized tight, disciplined performances and crisp guitar tones influenced by post-punk revival aesthetics. Recording took place during the post-9/11 period in New York City, which influenced the album's dark, atmospheric mood and sense of urban alienation. The technical approach prioritized clear separation of instruments and precise drum sounds that would become signature elements of the emerging New York post-punk scene.
