Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab — UDSACD 2005

Hot Buttered Soul was recorded at Stax Records' Studio A in Memphis, Tennessee in 1969, utilizing the label's in-house production team led by producer David Porter. The album featured Isaac Hayes' innovative orchestral arrangements by Hayes himself, who expanded upon the lush string and horn arrangements that defined Stax's soul sound of the era. Engineer Tom Dowd, known for his work with Atlantic Records, contributed to the technical aspects of the recording sessions. The production marked a significant departure from traditional soul music, incorporating elaborate instrumental introductions and extended arrangements that would become Hayes' signature style. This album established Hayes as a major artist and producer, setting the foundation for his later commercial success and influence on orchestral soul music.
