Donuts was recorded primarily between 2005 and early 2006 at J Dilla's home studio in Los Angeles while he battled lupus and complications from the disease. The album was produced entirely by J Dilla himself, who worked largely in isolation, crafting the 31 instrumental tracks using his signature MPC sampler and vinyl records as source material. J Dilla completed most of the production work from his bed during his final months, with the album mastered by Bob Power at Cristaux Mastering in New York. The production represents a culmination of his sampling and beat-making techniques, featuring dense layers of obscure soul, funk, and jazz samples chopped and looped into compact compositions averaging under two minutes each. Released on February 7, 2006, just days before J Dilla's death on February 10, the album has since become considered a landmark work in instrumental hip-hop and beat music production.
