Stones Throw Records — STH2126

# Summary of "Donuts" Production Donuts was recorded primarily between 2004 and 2005 at J Dilla's home studio in Los Angeles while he was battling lupus, which severely limited his mobility and studio time. The album was produced entirely by J Dilla himself, who used an Akai MPC3000 sampler as his primary production tool, chopping and layering obscure soul, funk, and jazz samples into cohesive instrumental beats. The project was engineered and mastered by J Dilla with minimal outside assistance, reflecting his perfectionist approach despite his declining health. Released in February 2006 by Stones Throw Records just days before his death on February 10, 2006, Donuts became celebrated as a masterclass in beat-making and sample manipulation, showcasing the technical possibilities of the MPC within the constraints of his illness. The album's production exemplified J Dilla's influential approach to hip-hop production during the mid-2000s boom of experimental beat-making.
