Laid is the fifth studio album by English alternative rock band James, released in 1993 on Fontana Records. The album was recorded at Miles Copeland's Chateau de Marouatte in France and produced by James themselves alongside producer Tim Booth, with engineer Nigel Godrich contributing to the technical aspects of the recording. The production marked a shift toward a more polished, accessible sound compared to their previous work, incorporating diverse influences and emphasizing atmospheric production elements. The album's lead single "Sit Down" became one of the band's most commercially successful tracks, and the album itself achieved significant chart success in the UK. Laid is considered a defining work of early 1990s alternative rock and showcased James's ability to blend introspective lyrics with expansive sonic arrangements.
