Officium — Jan Garbarek & The Hilliard Ensemble

Jan Garbarek & The Hilliard Ensemble

Officium

First released

Officium was recorded in 1993 at the Church of the Holy Cross in Schnifis, Austria, a setting chosen specifically to capture the acoustics of a sacred space that would complement the album's liturgical music. The album was produced by Jan Garbarek and Manfred Eicher, with Eicher serving as both producer and engineer through his role at ECM Records, the label that released the album. The recording utilized minimal microphone placement to preserve the natural reverb and spatial qualities of the church, reflecting ECM's characteristic approach to capturing acoustic ensembles. The project paired saxophonist Garbarek's contemporary improvisations with the Hilliard Ensemble's medieval and Renaissance vocal repertoire, creating an innovative fusion that defined the album's artistic vision. Released in 1994, Officium became one of ECM Records' most commercially successful releases and helped establish the aesthetic template for world music and contemporary sacred music recordings in the 1990s.
