Oxygène — Jean Michel Jarre

Jean Michel Jarre

Oxygène

First released

Oxygène was recorded and produced by Jean-Michel Jarre himself at his home studio in France during 1976-1977, utilizing the latest synthesizer technology available at the time, including the ARP 2500, Eminent 310U, and Mellotron. The album was engineered by Jarre with technical support from collaborators at his studio setup, and marked a significant artistic statement during the peak era of analog synthesizer music. Released in 1977, Oxygène became a landmark electronic music album, demonstrating innovative use of synthesis, layering, and spatial effects to create lush, atmospheric soundscapes. The production reflected Jarre's desire to move beyond the more mechanical sound of his previous work by focusing on creating emotional, organic textures through electronic means. The album's commercial and critical success helped establish synthesizer-based instrumental music as a viable mainstream genre during the late 1970s.
