Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk — Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley

Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk

First released

"Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk" was recorded across multiple sessions between 1996 and 1997 at various New York studios including Sony Music Studios, following the commercial success of Buckley's 1994 album "Grace". The album was produced by Jeff Buckley alongside engineer/producer Hal Willner, known for his experimental approach, and engineer Andy Wallace, with contributions from various collaborators reflecting Buckley's increasingly experimental musical direction. The recording process was notably protracted and unconventional, with Buckley constantly reworking and reconceiving songs, incorporating diverse influences from rock to avant-garde and world music. The project remained unfinished at the time of Buckley's death in 1997, and the album was posthumously completed and released in 1998 using available recordings and studio materials. The production documented Buckley's artistic evolution away from the gothic rock aesthetic of "Grace" toward more experimental and genre-blending territory.
