Aqualung — Jethro Tull

Jethro Tull

Aqualung

First released

Aqualung was recorded at Island Records Studios in London between 1970 and 1971, with producer Terry Ellis and engineer Robin Black overseeing the sessions. The album was notable for its layered instrumentation and complex arrangements, featuring extensive use of flute by Ian Anderson alongside electric and acoustic guitars, creating a sonic departure from the band's previous work. The recording took place during a period of significant creative experimentation for Jethro Tull, with the band working to develop a more conceptually ambitious sound. The production utilized multi-track recording techniques to build the dense, detailed arrangements that characterized the album. Aqualung was released in March 1971 and became the band's commercial breakthrough in the United States.
