Jethro Tull

Thick as a Brick

First released

Thick as a Brick was recorded at Rolling Stones Mobile Studio and Island Studios in London during 1971, with producer Terry Ellis and engineer Ronan O'Rahilly overseeing the sessions. The album was conceived as a single continuous piece of music divided into two parts to fit the vinyl format, representing an ambitious artistic statement during the progressive rock era. Ian Anderson led the songwriting and arrangement process, layering multiple instrumental parts and vocal overdubs to create the album's dense, intricate sound. The recording showcased Jethro Tull's technical capabilities across flutes, guitars, keyboards, and drums, with particular emphasis on complex overdubbing techniques available in early 1970s studio technology. Released in March 1972, the album became a commercial and critical success, reaching number one on the UK charts and establishing Jethro Tull as major figures in progressive rock.
