The album was produced by Bob Thiele for Impulse! Records and featured Coltrane's quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Elvin Jones accompanying vocalist Johnny Hartman. The sessions captured intimate ballad performances, representing a deliberate artistic choice by Coltrane to explore melodic beauty alongside his more experimental work of that era.
