impulse! — A 40

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman was recorded in March 1963 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, engineered by Rudy Van Gelder who was renowned for his work with jazz recordings. The album was produced by Bob Thiele for Impulse! Records and featured Coltrane's quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Elvin Jones accompanying vocalist Johnny Hartman. The sessions captured intimate ballad performances, representing a deliberate artistic choice by Coltrane to explore melodic beauty alongside his more experimental work of that era. The album marked one of the few instances where Coltrane prominently featured a vocalist and has become recognized as a classic example of late-career mainstream jazz collaboration.
