Giant Steps — John Coltrane

John Coltrane

Giant Steps

First released

Giant Steps was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey between May and December 1959, with engineer Rudy Van Gelder overseeing the sessions. The album was produced by Bob Thiele for Atlantic Records, marking a significant moment in jazz as Coltrane pushed harmonic complexity to new levels with rapid chord changes that became known as "Coltrane changes." The recording sessions featured Coltrane's classic quartet with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor, though some tracks included pianist Wynton Kelly and other musicians. Van Gelder's meticulous engineering captured the technical precision required for these challenging compositions, which presented unusual recording difficulties due to the speed and complexity of the material. The album's release in early 1960 established Coltrane as a leading modernist voice in jazz and demonstrated how advances in recording technology could document the most demanding contemporary jazz performances.
