My Favorite Things — John Coltrane

John Coltrane

My Favorite Things

First released

John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on October 21, 1960, with engineer Rudy Van Gelder overseeing the sessions. The album featured Coltrane's soprano saxophone, which he had recently adopted and was exploring extensively at this time, marking a significant shift in his instrumental approach. Producer Bob Thiele supervised the recording for Atlantic Records. The session included his Classic Quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. The title track became one of Coltrane's most iconic recordings, featuring his reharmonization of the Rogers and Hammerstein standard played on soprano saxophone over a hypnotic vamp arrangement.
