Centerfield was recorded in 1984 and released in 1985 as John Fogerty's comeback album after a decade-long absence from recording. The album was produced by John Fogerty himself along with producer James V. Wilsey, and was recorded primarily at The Saratoga Springs, a residential studio in upstate New York. Fogerty employed a straightforward rock and roll approach, using relatively traditional recording techniques that emphasized live instrumentation and his distinctive vocal delivery. The production marked a deliberate return to the roots rock style that defined Creedence Clearwater Revival, with Fogerty playing most of the instruments himself on many tracks. The album's success, driven by the hit single of the same name and the single "Change in the Weather," validated Fogerty's artistic vision and helped establish his solo career as separate from his Creedence legacy.
