DCC Compact Classics — GZS-1132

Blue was recorded between 1970 and 1971 primarily at A&M Studios in Los Angeles, with additional sessions at the Sunset Sound Recorders. The album was produced by Joni Mitchell herself in collaboration with engineer Henry Lewy, who would become her longtime production partner. Mitchell employed innovative recording techniques for its time, including the use of open tunings on acoustic guitar and unconventional microphone placement to capture intimate vocal performances and instrumental textures. The album was recorded during a period of significant personal transition in Mitchell's life, which directly influenced its introspective and emotionally vulnerable songwriting. Blue marked a departure from the orchestral arrangements of her previous work, featuring primarily Mitchell's voice and acoustic instruments, establishing a more stripped-down and personal sonic aesthetic that influenced countless artists in the decades following its release.
