Blue — Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell

Blue

First released

Blue was recorded between 1970 and 1971, primarily at A&M Studios in Los Angeles and other locations including Sunset Sound Recorders. Joni Mitchell worked with engineer Henry Lewy, who became a crucial collaborator on the project, and the album was produced by Mitchell herself along with Lewy. The recording featured Mitchell's distinctive fingerpicking guitar work and showcased intimate, acoustic arrangements that departed from the orchestral production of her previous album, Ladies of the Canyon. Mitchell's use of open tunings and unconventional guitar techniques created the album's signature sound, while the sparse production allowed her introspective lyrics about relationships and personal reflection to take center stage. Released in June 1971, Blue is considered a landmark folk-pop album that influenced countless singer-songwriters and established Mitchell as a major artistic voice in popular music.
