Reprise Records — MS 2038
The US 1971 original pressing is widely praised on SHF as the benchmark for natural, intimate sound and the definitive analog presentation of Blue.

Blue was recorded between 1970 and 1971 at A&M Studios and other locations in Los Angeles, with Joni Mitchell maintaining significant creative control over the production process. The album was produced by Mitchell herself along with Henry Lewy, an experienced engineer and producer who became a longtime collaborator, and featured minimal orchestration compared to her previous work. Mitchell employed a stripped-down approach, utilizing acoustic guitar, piano, and selective use of strings to create an intimate sound that emphasized her songwriting and vocal performance. The recording sessions captured Mitchell at a pivotal moment in her career, as she moved toward more personal, confessional songwriting while exploring open tunings on guitar that had become central to her musical identity. Blue was released in June 1971 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential singer-songwriter albums of the 1970s, with its production style influencing countless artists working in the folk and pop genres.
