Court and Spark — Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell

Court and Spark

First released

Court and Spark was recorded in Los Angeles between December 1973 and February 1974 at The Record Plant and other local studios. The album was produced by Joni Mitchell and Henry Lewy, an experienced engineer and producer who had previously worked with her and became a long-term collaborator. Mitchell worked with a full band for the first time on a studio album, incorporating session musicians and arrangers to create a more polished pop-oriented sound compared to her previous acoustic work. The production featured lush orchestral arrangements and electric instrumentation while maintaining Mitchell's distinctive songwriting, marking a significant shift toward mainstream accessibility. The album's commercial success, reaching number 2 on the Billboard 200, demonstrated the viability of Mitchell's more pop-leaning direction during the mid-1970s.
