Hejira — Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell

Hejira

First released

Hejira was recorded in 1975 at The Record Plant in Los Angeles and other locations, marking a significant departure from Mitchell's previous studio work. The album was produced by Joni Mitchell herself along with Henry Lewy, an engineer and producer who became a long-term collaborator. The recording featured live instrumentation with jazz musicians including bassist Charles Mingus collaborator and saxophonist Wayne Shorter, combined with Mitchell's extensive overdubbing and layering techniques. Mitchell used open tunings on her guitar throughout the album, contributing to its distinctive harmonic and sonic character. The production reflected a more introspective, personal approach compared to her earlier work, with minimal orchestration and emphasis on intimate vocal performance and acoustic guitar arrangements.
