Closer — Joy Division

Joy Division

Closer

First released

Closer, Joy Division's second and final studio album, was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England between March and July 1980 under the production of Martin Hannett, who shaped the album's distinctive sparse and atmospheric sound. Hannett employed unconventional recording techniques including heavily processed drums, extensive use of space and reverb, and innovative microphone placement to create the album's cold, industrial aesthetic that departed from the rawer sound of their debut Unknown Pleasures. The engineering work was handled by Chris Hunt and the album was mixed using the latest studio technology available at the time, with particular attention paid to the rhythmic precision of Bernard Sumner's synthesizers and Stephen Morris's drumming. The recording took place amid increasing tensions within the band and during a period of significant personal turmoil for lead singer Ian Curtis, who was battling epilepsy and depression. The album was released on July 15, 1980, just weeks after Curtis's death on May 18, 1980, making Closer a poignant final document of the band's artistic vision and contributing significantly to Joy Division's legacy in post-punk and electronic music history.
