The Köln Concert was recorded on January 24, 1975, at the Opera House in Cologne, Germany, in a single uninterrupted solo performance by Keith Jarrett on an acoustic Steinway piano. The recording was produced by Manfred Eicher for ECM Records, with engineer Martin Wieland capturing the performance using minimal microphone placement to preserve the natural acoustics of the venue. Jarrett performed entirely without a score or predetermined structure, relying on spontaneous improvisation, which was characteristic of his approach to solo piano concerts during this period. The album became one of the best-selling jazz piano recordings of all time and is considered a landmark achievement in ECM's catalog, defining the label's aesthetic of clarity and intimacy in jazz recording. The success of The Köln Concert established the template for Jarrett's prolific series of solo piano concert recordings throughout the late 1970s and beyond.
