The Köln Concert is a solo piano album recorded live on January 24, 1975, at the Opera House in Cologne, Germany, during a single unscheduled concert performance. The recording was captured by engineer Martin Wieland using portable recording equipment, as the performance was documented rather than formally produced in a studio setting. Keith Jarrett performed entirely without sheet music or advance preparation, playing spontaneously for over 53 minutes across three movements. The album was produced by Manfred Eicher of ECM Records, who was instrumental in bringing the recording to commercial release. The Köln Concert became one of the best-selling piano albums of all time and is considered a landmark recording in solo jazz piano music, demonstrating Jarrett's improvisational mastery and influencing the aesthetic of ECM's catalog throughout the 1970s and beyond.
