Houses of the Holy was recorded between 1971 and 1972 at various studios including Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, Island Studios in London, and Stargrove in France. The album was produced by Led Zeppelin and engineer Eddie Kramer, who had previously worked with Jimi Hendrix and played a crucial role in shaping the album's distinctive sound. The band experimented with diverse musical styles and instruments, incorporating reggae influences on "D'yer Mak'er" and using unconventional recording techniques such as recording drums in stairwells to capture unique acoustic properties. This marked a significant departure from their previous heavy blues-rock sound, showcasing greater musical experimentation and production sophistication. The album was released in March 1973 and became one of their most commercially successful records, reaching number one in multiple countries.
