Blue Lines, Massive Attack's debut album released in 1998, was recorded primarily at Real World Studios in Wiltshire, England, under the production guidance of Nellee Hooper and the group members themselves. The recording process drew heavily from the Bristol sound and trip-hop genre that was emerging during the mid-1990s, incorporating live instrumentation alongside electronic production techniques. The album featured contributions from various guest vocalists including Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins and Horace Andy, blending reggae, funk, and electronic influences. Key technical choices included the use of analog recording methods combined with digital sampling and manipulation, creating the atmospheric and bass-heavy sonic signature that defined the trip-hop genre. The production reflected the group's collaborative approach, with Andy Votel, DJ Tricky, and other Bristol-based musicians contributing to the project's distinctive sound.
