Heligoland — Massive Attack

Massive Attack

Heligoland

First released

Heligoland was recorded between 2008 and 2010 across multiple studios including the band's own Massive Attack Studios in Bristol, as well as locations in New York and other facilities. The album was produced by Massive Attack alongside producer Misha Lipscomb, with the band maintaining a collaborative approach by working with various vocalists and musicians in separate sessions rather than traditional band recording methods. The production incorporated digital and analog recording techniques, with a notable emphasis on working with featured artists remotely and in fragmented sessions, reflecting the band's dispersed creative process. Released in 2010, the album marked a return after a five-year hiatus and saw the band exploring new sonic territories while maintaining their signature electronic sound. Key technical choices included extensive use of layering, sampling, and digital manipulation, with the band continuing their practice of inviting diverse featured artists to contribute vocals and instrumentation.
