Wild Bunch Records — WBRLP4

Mezzanine was recorded primarily at various locations including the band's own studio setup and other facilities between 1996 and 1998, during a period marked by the members' personal struggles and creative tensions. The album was produced by Massive Attack themselves along with producer Eno and engineer Neil Davidge, who would become a long-term collaborator with the group. The recording process was notably experimental and lengthy, featuring extensive use of sampling, live instrumentation, and layered production techniques that pushed the technical capabilities of their equipment at the time. The band deliberately pursued a darker, more introspective sonic direction compared to their previous work, incorporating elements of dub, jazz, and drum and bass influences. Released in 1998, Mezzanine represented a significant artistic statement during the height of the trip-hop genre's mainstream popularity.
