Protection — Massive Attack

Massive Attack

Protection

First released

Protection, the third studio album by Massive Attack, was recorded primarily at Plural Studios in Bristol between 1993 and 1994, with additional work at Miles Ahead Studios. The album was produced by Massive Attack themselves alongside producer Nick Davis, who became a key collaborator for the band. The recording process emphasized experimental production techniques and incorporated more diverse vocal contributions, including appearances from singers like Tracey Thorn and Horace Andy. The album featured a darker, more introspective sound compared to its predecessor Blue Lines, reflecting the band's continued evolution in the trip-hop genre. Released in November 1994, Protection demonstrated Massive Attack's technical sophistication in sampling, sequencing, and layering of both electronic and organic instrumentation.
