Crack the Skye

First released

Crack the Skye was recorded in 2008 at Lakehouse Studios in Massachusetts with producer Brendan O'Brien, known for his work with bands like Pearl Jam and The Black Crowes. The band worked with engineer Matt Pelosi during the sessions, which focused on achieving a more polished and accessible sound compared to their previous work. O'Brien encouraged the band to refine their songwriting and arrangements while maintaining their heavy instrumentation, resulting in a more structured and progressive approach to their compositions. The album marked a significant production shift toward clarity and melodic elements, with layered vocals and orchestral arrangements becoming more prominent in Mastodon's music. Crack the Skye was released in March 2009 and became the band's commercial breakthrough, establishing them as a major force in progressive metal.
